The neighbours who disappeared between 1938 and 1945 were not only Jews or Romany but also Czech intellectuals, the handicapped, and in general, people who were different. Their disappearance might have been witnessed by today's student's parents or grandparents. Why did they disappear? Could someone have prevented it from happening? What is the historical, social and psychological context?
1. Contemporary witnesses
Did your grandparents ever speak of their war experience?
Did they lose any friends during the war?
Do they have any documents or photographs from the war?
Did their experience have any impact on their further lives?
2. General information
Do you know where the nearest Jewish community to your place of living was?
When did it flourish?
How did it end up?
Do you know about or do you at least know where to find out about interesting people from the history of the community and what their fates were (including artisans, writers, artists, scientists, doctors, lawyers, merchants, founders or owners of factories etc.)?
Where is the nearest Jewish cemetery, synagogue or memorial plaque related to the Jewish community?
Do you know where the nearest Romany colony, settlement, camp or a place of their forced concentration was?
Why, in your opinion, were the Romany persecuted and how?
Is there any memorial of the Romany in your district?
3. Sources of written information
Do you know any documents related to the Jewish community preserved in your district archive?
Does your school keep any written records from the time of the First and Second Republic?
Do you know since when and why Jewish students were banned from attending schools?
Do you know any interesting Jewish people that attended your school before the Second World War and what were their fates?
How did Czech students perceive the fact that some of their friends and classmates did not show up in school one day simply because they were not allowed to?
